Event description:

KNOMAD and UNDP jointinly hosted a hybrid dissemination event for the report "Turning the tide on internal displacement: A development approach to solutions" on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 12:30 – 14:00 EDT.

This event aimed at building awareness and understanding of the challenges of internal displacement, while providing a platform for new partnerships and initiatives to invest in development approaches to solutions. 

The 2021 High-Level Panel Report on Internal Displacement and follow up UN Secretary-General’s Action Agenda on Internal Displacement (June 2022) found that historic levels of internal displacement require coordinated development interventions and cannot be resolved through humanitarian aid alone. 

Over 59.1 million people remained forcibly displaced within their own countries at the end of 2021 due to conflict, violence, disaster and climate change. This was before the war in Ukraine, where 5.3 million people are now estimated to be internally displaced. By 2050, climate change could force more than 216 million people to move within their own countries.Millions have remained trapped in internal displacement for years, struggling to find work, cover their basic needs, get a good education for their children, stay healthy and feel safe. Some countries are falling into greater levels of poverty and inequality because of internal displacement, which results in global costs of over US$21 billion per year.
