Event description:
To mark International Migrants Day on December 18th, this seminar will present latest trends and outlook for global migration and remittance flows as reported in the latest Migration and Development Brief 30. The Brief also highlights progress made with migration-related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators for which the World Bank is a custodian or co-custodian: increasing the volume of remittances as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) (SDG indicator 17.3.2), reducing remittance costs (SDG indicator 10.c.1), and reducing recruitment costs for migrant workers (SDG indicator 10.7.1). Recent developments in the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regularly Migration (GCM) are also addressed together with a proposal for an implementation and review mechanism. Panelists will discuss major conclusions as well as opportunities and challenges related to the GCM which was adopted by UN member states on December 11, 2018.
