Developing countries see dynamic migration between rural and urban zones. Cross-country studies of rural-urban and urban-rural migration look largely into movements between administrative regions, thus telling us nothing about whether these migrants cross any ruralurban divide. Part of KNOMAD work program on internal migration, Prof. Lucas is adding value to the literature by exploring movements between the rural and urban zones by population characteristics in 69 low-income countries, using census data and Demographic and Health survey data. This BBL presents the initial findings of this comprehensive investigation, including motivations, issues in measurement, on symmetric movements, gender and marital status, age and the duration of stay, education - selection versus sorting, seasonal migrations, cohabitation and conjugal separation, migration of children and their parents, and ethnicity, language and religion.
